Autumn is one of the best times of year to plant flowering shrubs, evergreens and trees in southern Illinois. Several months of cool nights and temperate days are conducive to strong root development unlike spring planting that is typically followed by summer heat and stress. Evergreens like blue spruce, white pine, boxwood, and juniper are especially well suited to fall planting.
Soil preparation is important; we like cotton burr compost mixed in half and half with your soil. Plant your trees or shrubs slightly high, water well after planting and then once a week until the ground freezes hard. Finally, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch insulates the root system for winter.
